AcyMailing becomes fully GPLOn September 7, 2011 we received a message from the Joomla! Extensions Directory...
First came the frustration...
Then we had a meeting all together and thought about the last two years, what we accomplished so far and how great is this business adventure! It's a pleasure to work on Joomla! and to be part of the Joomla community. To be honest, it's a long time we are thinking about moving to the GPL model and I guess we just needed somebody else to push us! ;) So let's do it! AcyMailing becomes fully GPL
What does this licensing modification mean?Basically, it means we won't limit the use of our component. That will be the only difference with our current business model. We have always been open-source so no modification on that part. You will be able to install all versions of AcyMailing on as many websites as you want.
What's our new business model? We still propose four versions of Acymailing and you can upgrade from one to the other very easily... We don't change our component price. But instead of limiting the installation of AcyMailing to one website only, you can install it on as many websites as you want but the support/services are limited to one website per subscription. Each pack you can purchase on our website include one-year subscription.
What's gonna happen to YOU, AcyMailing user?Well, we can only strongly recommend you to update AcyMailing to get the GPL version! All our licences have been already converted into subscriptions so you can already download the latest version of AcyMailing via your account: You can manage your subscription here.
Do you want to say something about it?We recently created a facebook page for AcyMailing... I guess that will be the best place to add your comment and share about this decision. Are you happy with this new business model? Become our friend on facebook and ask your questions or share your comments! We will update this article based on the questions asked...
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat's gonna happen to the other teams with the same GPL / non GPL business model?I don't know... I guess they will all have to make a decision as well... maybe not the same as we took. At least if they see this article they can think about it and prepare themselves before being unpublished from the JED! What's gonna happen with the template pack? The template pack is already a subscription. Once purchased you can download all our templates and install them on as many websites as you want... so no modification for that pack. Some of your pages still mention that you're using a proprietary licence, why?We are updating all our articles but it takes time... But don't worry, everything you can purchase or download via our website is now 100% GPL. Please contact us if you found misinformation on our website and we will update the content.
